VEP RFID Placement for Cars with ADAS

Correct placement is vital to ensure your car's safety systems function perfectly.

The High-Tech Windscreen Challenge

Modern cars are amazing, but all that tech packed into the windscreen can create a bit of a puzzle. Your Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS)—the brains behind features like lane-keep assist and automatic braking—live right up there, using cameras and sensors near your rearview mirror.

It's brilliant stuff for keeping you safe, but it means we have to be extra careful when installing your VEP RFID tag. Sticking it in the wrong place can mess with those important safety features. That's why our professional installers at MyMechanic are specially trained to handle high-tech cars, making sure your VEP tag and your safety systems can live together in perfect harmony.

The "No-Go" Zones for RFID Placement

When you've got a car with ADAS, there are a few 'no-go' zones for that little RFID tag. You absolutely have to avoid:

  • The Camera Box. That black, dotted area around your rearview mirror where the camera lives? That's sacred ground. The tag can't go on it or in front of it.
  • The Camera's View. This one's a no-brainer, but the tag can't block the camera's view of the road ahead.
  • Metallic Windscreens. Some cars, especially luxury models, have a special solar-reflective coating on the windscreen. It's great for keeping the car cool, but it's also great at blocking RFID signals.

Best Practices for Safe RFID Installation

So, how do we get it right? Our experts at MyMechanic have a simple but strict playbook.

For most cars, we use the standard spot.

The tag goes on the passenger (left) side of the windscreen, a good 5cm away from any metal pillars or the black-dotted edge. This keeps it well clear of all the important ADAS gear in the middle.

For cars with metallic windscreens, we go to plan B.

If your windscreen is the signal-blocking type, we use a special, tougher RFID tag that gets installed on your left headlamp. This is the official, JPJ-approved workaround.

We always check first.

Before we even peel the backing off the tag, our installers will take a good look at your car to see exactly what ADAS hardware you have and check for any special windscreen coatings. That way, we know we're using the right tag in the right place.

Why Professional Installation Matters

Getting the placement right the first time is a really big deal. A tag in the wrong spot can cause all sorts of problems, like:

  • Your safety features switching off or acting weirdly.
  • The tag not scanning at the gantry, leaving you stuck.
  • Having to go through the hassle and cost of getting the tag replaced.
